The REAL prize is not the open door

the real prize is Christ himself

You still have years. Use them. Steward the strength that remains. Love the people in front of you. Serve where the door is still open. But hold it all loosely, because the real prize was never the open door. The real prize is Christ Himself, and He does not age out of reach.

You will not be on top forever. That is true. But you are held by the One who is from everlasting to everlasting. That is truer.

Explain

Look at Philippians 3:7–14. Paul has just listed all the things that once looked like open doors and high standing—his pedigree, his zeal, his righteousness under the law. Then he says:

“But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord… that I may know him… Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own… I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

The “prize” is not the next open door, the next season of influence, the next achievement still available at 42 or 52 or 72. The prize is Christ Himself—knowing Him, being found in Him, sharing in His sufferings and resurrection. Everything else is secondary currency. When the outer doors begin to narrow, the true treasure is still fully available, because it was never located in those doors to begin with.

That is why the same apostle can write, while already feeling the weight of years and chains, that he does not lose heart (2 Corinthians 4:16). The outer man declines; the inner man is being renewed because the prize has not moved.

So when I said the real prize is Christ, I was simply restating what Paul already said under the inspiration of the Spirit. You are already tasting the wisdom of that truth at 42. Keep holding it. It will only grow sweeter as the calendar turns.
