First Principles of the Legal Code of Dragon Ridge Castle
- The Purpose of Law The Law exists to preserve Order and Stability in the realm, to render Justice to every soul according to their deeds, and to reflect the Divine Order so that sin is restrained (for only the Heavenly Father can truly restrain the heart), the common good is advanced as best we know at the time, and souls are drawn toward virtue and a higher calling.
- Authority and Power All Law derives its authority from the Crown and ultimately from the Eternal Sovereign. It must be backed by the full power of the Throne given by God, the Watch, and the sworn knights of Dragon Ridge. Without enforcement, Law is empty—a mere suggestion. Power shall be exercised with wisdom, never on sudden impulse.
- Justice and Impartiality Justice demands that each person receive their due. Courts and magistrates shall weigh evidence fairly, according to the facts of the case and without regard to wealth, station, or favor. The innocent shall be protected; the guilty shall face measured consequence. Yet we recognize that corrupted officials and favoritism may arise; therefore, safeguards, oversight, and rights of appeal shall be established to guard against such corruption.
- Mercy and Redemption While justice must stand firm, mercy shall have its place for the truly repentant. The Law shall provide paths for restitution, atonement, and restoration where possible, mirroring the mercy shown to us by the Divine. Mercy shall not undermine order, weaken rightful punishment, or endanger the realm. This reflects the deeper truth that on the Day of Judgment, only through the grace of Christ can any soul enter Paradise without destroying its holiness—for we all fall short and stand in need of the Redeemer.
- The Common Good Laws shall promote the welfare of the people as a guiding principle, though not as an absolute guarantee, for no earthly law or power can override what God Himself has appointed or allowed. Specifically: a. Family shall be understood as the sacred structure under one house, the foundation of the realm. b. Property shall mean those lands, goods, or holdings acquired through negotiated and mutually agreed-upon contracts within the realm of Glorystone. c. Honest Labor shall mean lawful work, and the law shall provide reasonable protections for the worker while upholding the rights and responsibilities of all parties. In these matters, the law shall protect life (meaning the preservation of existence), family, property, and honest labor; encourage trade and prosperity; and safeguard the faith and moral foundation of the realm. Yet we acknowledge that while the law can defend life and opportunity, it cannot guarantee a prosperous or easy life for every soul, for such outcomes rest ultimately in the hands of the Divine and the choices of men, and not in the power of government.
- Hierarchy of Offenses Crimes against the Divine and the Crown shall be judged most severely, for they threaten the order and safety of the entire realm. Offenses against persons and property shall follow in weight. All offenses shall be clearly defined so that none may claim ignorance before the court. Even divine law shows this balance: offenses against God Himself carry the greatest weight, yet the Lord judges all souls with perfect fairness. Our law shall mirror this holy pattern—protecting the throne as the steward of peace, without descending into favoritism or tyranny.
- Review and Growth The Law is a living instrument. It shall be reviewed each year by the King’s Council so that it may serve the realm faithfully as times and needs change, while never departing from these sacred principles. As our people grow in wisdom and understanding, certain laws may be amended to reflect that growth.
